mosaic Christmas Fair a GREAT success

Thanks to the efforts of our friends and supporters mosaic raised over £1,000 at the Christmas Fair. Huge thanks go out to everyone who donated and everyone who came along and special thanks to Matt Hampson for opening the fair.
The fund we raise will be for Working Together for Change and we are discussing how they can be used to provide some new low cost services. We will make sure that we put details on the website.

Oral History Project

mosaic has a grant for a year to carry out an oral history project on the lives of disabled people. We are very excited about this. Currently we have a steering group of 15 disabled people facilitated by Joan Rowbottom. With training from Colin Hyde from the East Midlands Oral History Archive Steering group members will be interviewing 45 people about their lives. At the end of the project there will be a travelling exhibition and a magazine. Watch out for more information.

Launch of Victoria Penrose Photographic Exhibition
Victoria Penrose has recently graduated in Photography at De Montfort University. Victoria’s work is based on her Dad, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour 11 years ago and at that time was given 2 months to live. The photographs in ‘Dad’ document her Dads life before his diagnosis, and his life since. How his illness and disability has affected him, Victoria and his family. ‘Dad’ a book of photograph’s and words is a moving documentation which would surprise me if anyone experiencing it would not be left with a dry eye.
The project following ‘Dad’, ‘Secret lives of my Dad’ is a more humorous set of photos in which Victoria as created backdrops and props to create a group of pictures where her Dad becomes different characters. This contracts to the emotional ‘Dad’, but both projects I think challenge disability in a way I can’t describe.
mosaic launched Victoria Penrose’s ‘Secret lives of my Dad’ Exhibition here at mosaics new building. The first Exhibition which mosaic have hosted. A small crowd enjoyed the exhibition, chatted, drank teas and ate lots of cake! Malcolm (Victoria’s Dad) was able to come which was fantastic. The first time he has been able to view them (travelling in a wheelchair from the Isle of Man to Leicester isn’t easy). The afternoon has a really positive atmosphere, it was filled with emotion, happy and sad which reflect the photographs themselves.
We are hoping that Victoria will run a workshop based on her photographs so anyone who might be interested in attending should ring Katie Barradell on 0116 231 87 20 or email
We would also welcome interest from disabled artists or artists with a connection to disability for future Exhibitions.

Working together for Change
This is a joint project between mosaic, Just Services and Self Advocacy in Action trying to help both disabled people and carers learn more about the opportunities that Direct Payments and Personal Budgets can offer. We offer Taster Days and can hold meetings for carers to find out about what can be on offer.
Here’s what one of our attendees said: “I had a great day at the Taster Day. I loved doing knitting and recycling. It’s the first time I have ever done something like that. I’d like to do more” Following the taster day Stacey is setting up a Knitting Group in the Stoneygate area.
