The wedding list
While our resources will be able to buy the land and building and some of the things we need, we have a huge list of things we will not be able to buy initially. We have created what is euphemistically called ‘the wedding list’ with items we need listed and prices attached. This could be from a teaspoon to a whole kitchen. This is our final ‘fling’ at fundraising specifically for the new building. If you want to be part of this and help we will be very grateful. Donations will be accepted at the Time4Change account. This can be done in cash through donate online, cheque or standing order. For more details contact Barbara Howard. … read more about this …
New Building
When we sold the Guild Hall in Cotton Street, Leicester in 2000, we designated the funds we raised from the sale to go towards a new building, In 2000 we carried out a big consultation to find out what disabled people wanted from a new building. People valued the role the Guild Hall played in being the venue of regular social activities and fundraising events. It was a ‘hive of activity’. The Guild Hall offered a ‘drop in service’ and was a place where regular appointments were made to complete benefit applications etc. Good parking and good public transport routes were thought to be important. People wanted a location that recognised that work across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland; a central location was important. We originally envisaged that we would have a purpose built building. It has taken some time to come anywhere near achieving this ambition. We have looked at a lot of sites across leicester and dismissed them for lots of different reasons. At one point we were negotiating to build a centre at Watermead Country park but this also came to nothing. Earlier this year we met with Westleigh Properties and are now buying a building at Ratby Lane (at the traffic lights at Hinkley Road). … read more about this …
Time4Change - an update
TIme4Change was an account that we set up about 4 years ago to help with a new building. The original idea was that people might collect their change (1p 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p etc) and give it to mosaic. We have raised quite a lot of money this way. We have an agreement with the bank of Scotland that we can pay change and small amounts of money into this account with no charges. We also get some interest. … read more about this …
Living with…. the book
Living with… is a powerful, evocative and thought-provoking series of 34 articles written by people who have a range of different medical “conditions”. The contributors offer the unique privilege of understanding the day-to-day reality of their “living with”; a perspective rarely given the time and attention it deserves. They are ordinary people living in extraordinary circumstances, battling to retain their dignity and their sense of worth and purpose in a world that can be at best thoughtless, and at worst, cruel. … read more about this …
