Learn 4 Change
Learn4Change (L4C) was set up in 2010 as a joint project with Just Services. It is a not-for-profit Learning Centre registered with City and Guilds. L4C is currently offering:
- City and Guilds Advocacy Qualification
- Learning Seminars
- Advocacy Placements
Currently we have two Assessors and one Internal Verifier who work in L4C. 8 candidates are working through the Advocacy Qualification – the first will probably qualify at the end of October 2011. We are still taking candidates. The qualification involves practical observations, Peer Groups, taught sessions and project work using a variety of methods. We are able to offer support to people who consider themselves to be disabled for whatever reason. For further details about the Advocacy Qualification contact Liz Mackenzie on 0116 2293102
The Advocacy Quakification requires that a candidate is working in the advocacy field as either a paid worker or a volunteer. This is the reason why we are offering ADVOCACY PLACEMENTS. These are for people who are not currently working in the field of advocacy but need some experience before being able to start the qualification. The placements are supervised and work is available in the evenings and weekends. For further information contact Debbie Farrar on 0116 2318720
The Learning Seminar programme is very popular. Seminars are for two hours with tea and coffee (and sometimes biscuits); they cost £10. The seminars are based on the belief that the best way of learning is from ‘experts by experience’. So far, topics have included Understanding Multiple Sclerosis, Understanding Advocacy, Understanding Epilepsy and Understanding the Social Model of Disability. The programme for the rest of the year is:
- Weds 14 September 1.30-3.30pm: Understanding dementia – a carer’s perspective
- Tuesday 18 October: Understanding risk taking – how can you support people to take risks?
- Weds 23 November: Understanding choice and how to support people to make their own choices
- Tuesday 6 December: Understanding strokes
Our programme for the learning Seminars for 2012 will be out in September. We have already done a couple of ‘in-house’ sessions on topics like epliepsy for organsiations that have a lot of staff who want to attend because we can negoitate a reduction in price.
