Direct Payments
what are direct payments?
- Money from your Local Authority for you to purchase the community care services you need and prefer
- Funds are available through Social Services
- Their purpose is to enable independent living at home and within the community
- An alternative to Home Care or Day Services
who can receive direct payments?
- Disabled people aged 18 and over
- People with mental health issues
- People with physical or sensory disability
- Older people
- People with learning disabilities
- Carers
- Families with disabled children
- Disabled parents for childrens services
- People who have been assessed by Social Services as needing Community Care services
- People who are able, and have chosen, to manage their own independent care – with or without assistance

Direct payments funding can enable you to:
- choose how you arrange your own care support
- have greater personal independence
- enjoy greater freedom, choice and control
- continue living at home
what is the direct payments support services (DPSS)?
DPSS provide ongoing advice and support to people receiving direct payments funding from your Local Authority and from the ILF (Independent Living Fund).
The aim of the DPSS is to support people to organise their own independent living care arrangements and to manage their Direct Payments scheme, finances and staff.
