mosaic’s counselling service

what is Counselling?

Counselling is a word that is frequently used but which many people find confusing. In mosaic, counselling means meeting with a counsellor, usually on a weekly basis to talk about a particular problem or difficulty you have. Sometimes having someone to talk to who is not part of your family or friendship network can help – whether you have a specific problem such as a relationship breakdown or a build up of concerns over a number of years “counselling is not about telling you what to do but having someone to help you find your own answers”.

Who is mosaic’s Counselling Service for?

mosaic’s Counselling Service is for anyone who considers themselves to be a disabled person and is over the age of 18.

It is not for carers or family members or partners of someone who is disabled. There are other services for carers, family members or partners like clasp

Is mosaic’s Counselling Service only for issues related to disability?

No. There is no reason why a disabled person shouldn’t experience all the same things as non-disabled people and therefore may want counselling to help them deal with it e.g. childhood abuse, relationship breakdown, depression, domestic violence, bereavement etc etc.

However some disabled people might want to deal with issues that do relate to their medical condition e.g. difficulty in accepting being disabled, the way that being disabled affects your relationship, pain etc etc.

Why does mosaic offer a counselling service?

There are 3 unique features to mosaic’s Counselling Service:

  • It is free.
  • It can happen in your own home or a place of your choosing.
  • A counsellor can link you into other mosaic services

Offering this level of flexibility is an important feature of mosaic’s services.

How do I get counselling?

  • If you want counselling you can ring up yourself or get someone else to do it on your behalf e.g. A Social Worker.
  • As soon as you ask for counselling then someone will visit you at home to do an assessment. This means finding out whether mosaic’s Counselling Service meets your needs.
  • Your name then goes on mosaic’s waiting list until a Counsellor becomes free.
  • People are offered a Counselling Service on a first come, first served basis.

Who does the counselling?

All our counsellors are volunteers. They are trained to a level where under the rules of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists they are able to counsel.

All our counsellors must attend a monthly group supervision session provided by mosaic’s Counselling Supervisor.

Is there a time limit to counselling?

  • Each counselling session will last about 1 hour and usually takes place weekly.
  • Some people only want or need counselling for a short period e.g. 6 weeks.
  • Some people require counselling over a longer period, maybe up to a year.
