History
1937:
There was a need identified for a voluntary organisation like the Guild to be set up in Leicestershire. This was set up and called the ‘Leicestershire Voluntary Association for Cripples Welfare’ and was based at 6 St. Martins.
1949:
On 13 May of this year, Mr Arthur Percy Groves died (the second son of Arthur and Mary Groves). He was the first Honorary Secretary until 1938 where he became President.
1958:
The Guild celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a membership of between 300-400 disabled people.
1964:
The ‘Leicester Guild of the Crippled’ decided to change their name to the ‘Leicester Guild of the Physically Handicapped’ on 23 November of this year. They felt the word ‘cripple’ had become unpopular.
1967:
The Leicestershire Association relocated to a new office in room 35 at County Hall in Glenfield.
1972:
A quarterly Newsletter was introduced and over 500 copies were circulated each issue.
1975:
The Golden Jubilee of the opening of Cropston Holiday Home. The Guild Council decided to extend the dining room to commemorate the occasion.
1978:
This year introduced a new project a telephone helpline operating between 2pm and 4pm each day. It was known as DIAL Disablement, Information and Advice Help Line.
1981:
International year of the disabled when Project 81 was launched to raise funds to open a holiday bungalow in the Grounds of Overstrand Hall in Norfolk, in November of this year.
